6 steps to get a nice start in Lisbon

1. Temporary home
If you haven’t got a place to stay in your first days, Hostels in the city center are always an easy and cheap option and where you can meet lots of people straight away. Check these websites:  Old Town HostelCentral HostelLisbon 4 u.

2. University
If you have received the welcome kit at our office we advise you to go to your university so you can be informed on what to do relate to your course. Each university has their own system when it comes to foreigner students so we can not assure you what you ‘ll need to do.

3. Mobile phone
Inside the welcome kit you will find a SIM card from Moche which free calls and SMS to all networks, Internet and free data for communication apps (Whatsapp, viber, skype, facebook messenger, snapchat). The SIM card is compatible with all European mobile phones (mobile must be unlocked). More news about this soon!

4. Transports
With this kit you'll get a map of public transports as well as the document to do the monthly travel card, Lisboa Viva card.
What is Lisboa Viva card? It’s a personal, monthly rechargeable card. You can use it as many times as you wish paying exactly the same price, for example: if you want to use bus, underground and trains inside the Lisbon urban area you’ll pay 35€. If you’ll study in Lisbon and you’ll use the public transport system more than once a day this card is worth it for you!
For more information about Lisboa Viva card or 7 colinas, the differences between them, rates, how to recharge, where to buy them, visit our website's Transports area where you’ll find useful information.

5. Accommodation
Normally students take one week to find an apartment depending on the time of your arrival.
Where to look for an apartment:
• At our websites:
http://www.casabica.blogspot.pt
http://www.lisbonbicahouse.blogspot.pt
Look for areas:
• In the city center (otherwise you’ll spend more money and time in transports)
• With subway or bus stations nearby
• Near your university
• The most wanted neighborhoods for international students and young professionals: Bica, Bairro Alto and Santa Catarina.
Areas you should avoid:
• Intendente
• Martim Moniz
• Anjos
.Arroios
.Avenida Almirante Reis
Important questions:
• Does the room have a window?
• Are the costs with electricity, water, gas and internet included in the price?
• Does the apartment have: o Wireless internet? o Kitchen? o Common area? o Cleaning service?
• Does the owner live there as well?
• If somebody of my family or friends wants to visit me, can they stay in my room for a few days? Do I have to pay any extra fee?

Be careful when landlords ask you to leave a deposit or pay in advance without visiting the place (pictures can be very tricky). Never give more than half a rent (in this case, if you don´t like the house you have 15 days paid and during this days you can look for another apartment).
After finding an apartment:
• You’ll have to leave a deposit as a guarantee, normally 1 month of rent. In case you decide to leave the apartment the landlord will have 1 month to find someone else to replace you. In this way you don´t need to pay your last month of stay.
• You’ll have to leave a deposit (around 100€) as a guarantee, that is returned in the end of your stay if everything goes alright.
If you need to buy furniture or other things to your place the best and cheapest shops are:
• IKEA
• Feira da Ladra (flea market) – every Tuesdays and Saturdays (address: Campo de Santa Clara)

6. Opening a bank account
The main advantages of opening a Portuguese bank account are: no withdrawal fees (most of the international cards have it), the possibility to withdraw more than 200€/day and the option of recharging your mobile and your monthly pass (Lisboa Viva Card) in every ATM machine (services unavailable with international cards)
To open a bank account, you need to go to a bank with your passport and a proof that you study in Portugal. The next step is to ask for the portuguese fiscal number (the bank can do that for you). After the approval,  you’ll can get a debit card and in most of the cases there are no account fees.
